Farewell to a Visionary Leader in Clean Transportation
After a transformative 24 years at the helm of Calstart, John Boesel, the organization's Chief Executive, announced his retirement, effective at the end of this year. Under his leadership, Calstart has evolved from a fledgling consortium into a national powerhouse dedicated to zero-emission transportation.
Founded in 1992, Calstart began with around 40 member companies, advocating for the clean transportation movement—a mission that has only grown stronger over the years. Joining as Vice President of Technology Programs in 1993, Boesel was named CEO in 2001. With approximately 213 members and regional offices sprawled across Brooklyn and Troy, Calstart is now a pillar in the clean transport sector.
Championing Clean Transportation Initiatives
Throughout his tenure, Boesel has been the driving force behind numerous policies aimed at establishing stronger emission standards and incentivizing zero-emission vehicle adoption across the U.S. Remarkably, he has led initiatives to oversee over $1 billion in zero-emission vehicle incentives in partnership with the California Air Resources Board, allowing Calstart to manage more than 10 programs spread across multiple states by mid-2026.
"It has been an honor to serve Calstart for more than three decades and lead the team that has played a key role in growing the United States’ clean transportation industry," Boesel reflected, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity and excitement for Calstart's future.
Future Directions for Calstart
As Calstart's board initiates the search for Boesel’s successor, the fresh leadership will be vital in navigating the accelerating innovation in the clean transportation field. The growth trajectory set by Boesel presents enormous opportunities for the organization to expand its influence further, especially with the rising demand for sustainable transport solutions globally.
Boesel plans to remain active in the field, continuing his advocacy for the clean transportation movement even as he transitions from his role at Calstart. His commitment reflects an enduring passion that inspires both industry professionals and environmental advocates alike.
In reflecting on Boesel's impactful tenure, Cynthia Williams, Chair of Calstart’s Board, noted his significant contributions that solidified Calstart’s position as a leader in transportation decarbonization.
Keeping the Momentum Going
Calstart's drive for cutting-edge clean transportation solutions continues to resonate strongly, with its future seemingly brightening under new leadership. As the organization gears up for this transition, it is clear that the legacy left by John Boesel will serve as a guiding light for all who follow in his footsteps.
